A Health Teacher Instructs Her Students About The Critical Nature Of Alcoholism Signs
Miss Jackson was a health teacher at the best known co-ed high school in the region. Even though she had been teaching for only two or three years, she had already acquired a reputation as a teacher with teaching techniques that motivated and encouraged her pupils to think and to learn.
For example, one Thursday afternoon at 1:30 she addressed the students in her classroom and announced the following: "For the next three or four days we are going to learn about some commonplace alcoholism signs from a general standpoint and we are also going to learn about a number of the most highly researched signs of alcoholism from a less general and more specific point of view."
"Not every one of these alcoholism warning signs will without a doubt validate that someone with a drinking problem is a person who is alcohol dependent, but the more signs that an individual exhibits, the more likely it is that he or she is an alcohol dependent person."
Miss Jackson then explained to the the pupils that each pupil would be accountable for investigating three alcoholism signs and then presenting his or her results to the other members in the class by way of a fifteen minute oral presentation.
The day after all of the pupils completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a piece of paper with a list of all the alcohol addiction signs that were discussed and presented in class and in the presentations. Miss Jackson then asked the students in her class to study the list and rank the top seven alcohol addiction signs that were most indicative of alcohol addiction. After around twenty minutes, Miss Jackson collected the pieces of paper and told her pupils that after she tallies the results, she will discuss her findings the morning of the next school day.
Miss Jackson asked the pupils in her classroom to go over the data on the piece of paper she passed out and then to raise their hand if they had any questions, issues, or concerns. Within 20 or 30 seconds, almost every student in the class raised her or his hand. It was evident that the pupils had some issues, questions, or concerns about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism professionals. For instance, virtually every pupil disagreed with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism authorities, specifically, "Do you feel exceedingly nauseous when you refrain from drinking?"
Miss Jackson then explained to the students in her class why this answer was the most precise sign of alcohol addiction. She stressed the fact that the most important difference between alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse is the physical dependency that is experienced with alcohol dependency and not with alcohol abuse.
In essence this means that when a person who is alcohol dependent abruptly quits drinking, he or she will go through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the significance of alcohol withdrawals in the life of the alcohol addicted person, the pupils started to comprehend the essential difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction.
A few minutes later the bell rang, indicating that the end of class had arrived. Based on the buzz displayed by the pupils when they were leaving the room, Miss Jackson recognized that she had motivated and stimulated the pupils in her class to stop and think about a significant health issue and social problem that exists in our country.
