A Young Man's Excessive And Abusive Drinking Leads To A DWI And Time In The City Jail

Richard had a very difficult time maintaining a job. In truth, because of his laziness and lack of motivation, he was unemployed far more often than he was employed with a job. And when he did secure a job, he had a very difficult time getting to work when his shift started, he frequently got poor performance evaluations, and he called off sick so frequently that he typically got fired just a few weeks after he began working.

It goes without saying that one of the consequences of Richard's terrible work history was the fact that he was virtually broke much of the time. Despite Richard's less than acceptable employment history and financial misbehavior, nevertheless, somehow, someway he managed to drink irresponsibly much of the time.

So it came as no big shock when Richard got a fifth DUI. When he went to court, the magistrate clearly stated to Richard that his alcohol-related behavior was terrible and, as a result, he was going to sentence Richard to spend six months in the city jail.

During his time behind bars, Richard was required to learn more about alcohol abuse facts such as alcohol related effects and alcohol deaths, about the disruptive consequences of hazardous drinking, and he was expected to get alcohol therapy. The magistrate highlighted the fact that unless Richard receives quality alcohol treatment and discovers how to live a life of sobriety, he will more likely than not be spending a lot more time placed behind bars.

Richard said that he grasped what the judge was declaring but he still asserted that placement in the city jail was not the appropriate response. The judge saw things from an entirely different orientation and asserted that it was his professional responsibility to keep individuals off the streets who drink and drive and who get one or more DWIs. To substantiate this perspective, the judge quoted some honored, extensively evaluated alcoholism and alcohol abuse facts and statistics that stressed some of the demoralizing consequences that are associated with hazardous drinking such as alcohol related deaths.

Although Richard grasped the fact that he drank in an irresponsible and abusive manner, he never thought that he was a person who was addicted to alcohol. So it was quite a surprise when Richard began suffering from chronic alcoholism symptoms and alcohol withdrawal symptoms around five hours after getting placed behind bars.

To treat his alcohol withdrawals in a safe and sound manner, Richard was life flighted to a drug and alcohol treatment facility for alcohol detox and then returned to jail. While locked up in the local jail Richard got alcohol counseling but because he got this rehabilitation as something that was mandated for him, he failed to take ownership of his hazardous drinking.

When his time in jail was over, the judge without indecision announced to Richard that he would be under strict scrutiny and would be mandated to take periodic random breath alcohol tests. After hearing how Richard failed to take ownership of his drinking problem and how he reluctantly followed the counseling procedures while in the municipal jail, the judge knew that it was just a matter of time before he would be seeing Richard once again in court about his hazardous and excessive drinking behavior.

As the magistrate reflected on Richard's situation, he couldn't help but think about how some people never use common sense and learn how to live in an accountable and mature manner.
