To say that my folks weren't thrilled when I decided to go to beauty college is an understatement. They were certainly humiliated. I was going to a great one, but they didn't care. The Aveda cosmetology school, you see, wasn't a prominent institution. My family had been attending Princeton University for about three generations now, and cosmetology schools were out of the question. They did not see the beauty profession as a reputable field. Like many people, they assumed it was just something for secondary school drop-outs to do. What they didn't realize was that beauty schools were my passion. It wasn't just an easy job for me to get. It was something that I wished to do for a job.

What troubled me most about the reaction they had to my cosmetology schools decision was the rancor in their eyes. It more or less said to me that, if I were to go to beauty college, I would not be their child anymore. The weird thing is that they have supported me through thick and thin. Cosmetology schools were inconceivable, but when I was expelled for getting in fist fights, they hardly punished me at all. It was as if, as long as I was doing anything that was considered reputable for men to do, I was okay. When I decided to go to cosmetology school, however, it was something different. They didn't say it out and out, but it was clear that they had uncertainties about my lifestyle. I did not care. It was what I wished to do, and it was what I would do.

It turns out that cosmetology school did not work out exactly as I had thought. Do not misunderstand me - I loved the work. The problem was that it wasn't something that I could see myself doing for 10 or 20 years. I had an apprentice-program with a wedding photographer, and I adored going out on projects with the wedding photographer and doing make-up for the brides. However, I could not see working for a wedding photographer until the end of time. I finished the beauty college that I was attending, got a job, and utilized that to pay my way through college. Cosmetology schools were just a transitory phase after all. Nonetheless, I'm glad that I made the choice that I did. If I hadn't tried out going to beauty schools, I never would've known if I was making my own decisions. I wouldn't have been able to engage in college, because I would've thought that I was only doing it because my folks wanted me to. By trying out cosmetology schools, however, I was being my own man.
