Benchmade 710 - Choose The Ultimate Pocket Knife
The Benchmade 710 although simple looking is the end product of a lot of hard work over the path of 4 years of the two great designers Bull McHenry and Jason Williams. The AXIS lock is completely ambidextrous and makes it possible for easy one-handed opening and closing of the blade without your fingers ever being in the path of the blade. The lock design is simple to activate with no directions needed on how the knife functions.
As plain as the lock is, possibly its main selling feature is its brute strength. In testing, the lock supported a negative weight of over 200 pounds with no damage. When the lock does finally fail, the liners merely crack over the locking pin, although at no time in Benchmade's testing would the blade have closed on the users hand.
The AXIS lock features two Omega shaped springs added for significant functional redundancy. The springs are pressured a little bit. Multiple tests indicate they should last indefinitely. In the improbable incident that one of the springs does fail, the other will still operate the knife just fine.
Is this the strongest lock made? That's quite hard to say for certain. The maker states the Benchmade 710 is more rugged than any other knives on market. The blade of the version 710 has a reverse-curve grind for better cutting capability. It is made out of D2 steel.
A detachable stainless steel pocket clip is placed on the base end of the knife. This given clip location on the base end is necessary because of the locking system. Positioning the clip on the pivot end would force the knife to stick out much far out the pocket.
The belt clip is reversible and feels natural in hand. My 710 Benchmade holds its edge really well and I use it for everything. Like opening packages and envelopes, cutting string, heavy duty plastic box straps, cutting into the occasional snack, cutting paper and cardboard, etc.
