Irresponsible Drinking Leads To Mental Health Issues And Depression, An Enabling Spouse, And Encouragement For Beneficial Change
It took quite a few years but Sarah eventually made up her mind that she had it with her husband's unhealthy and excessive drinking. She was exhausted from seeing Keith come home after midnight from drinking rather than spending time with her and the kids. She was also worn-out from the DWI Keith recently got. Additionally she was worn-out from creating explanations for Keith when he couldn't show up for work on time due to his abusive and hazardous drinking.
Not only this but she was nervous about the fact that their relationship was deteriorating due to Keith's careless and excessive drinking. And lastly she was exhausted from the insecure financial mess into which he had put his family due to his unhealthy and excessive drinking behavior.
One Thursday evening when Sarah was pondering what she could do about her husband's careless and excessive drinking, she got to the point that she frankly had to do something positive to cut into the destructive cycle of Keith's careless and hazardous drinking behavior. So Sarah looked in the local yellow pages under "alcohol treatment" and found more than a few rehabilitation centers that were all located less than fifteen miles away from where Keith and she resided.
When Sarah called each rehabilitation clinic she introduced herself and said that her spouse was manifesting careless and excessive drinking behavior. She also articulated that her spouse had a fine health insurance program at his job and that residential or outpatient alcohol abuse rehab would be covered if a doctor in the company health network recommended the rehab.
After listening to Sarah describe her husband's abusive and unhealthy drinking, the healthcare practitioner in a supportive but firm manner explained to Sarah how she more likely than not played a major part in her spouse's excessive and hazardous drinking through the months and the years. How? Primarily by covering for him rather than allowing him to suffer the results of his careless and excessive drinking behavior.
Stated somewhat more forcefully, the psychologist stated to Sarah that she may have been inadvertently enabling Keith's careless drinking behavior. The psychologist also highlighted the fact that Sarah would not be able to control her spouse's behavior. With the encouragement and guidance of the rehab team at the rehabilitation facility, on the other hand, she would not only be able to learn how to refrain from contributing to Keith's abusive and hazardous drinking but she would also be able to learn how to motivate him to schedule an appointment at the rehab center so that he could go over his careless drinking behavior with a psychologist.
Fortunately after Sarah discussed this with Keith and he saw that she was not joking, he told her that he had been quite disturbed by his abusive and unhealthy drinking behavior and that he was very relieved to learn that Sarah wanted to do something productive about his abusive and hazardous drinking behavior. Consequently, he scheduled an appointment to see a physician at the local alcohol rehab facility.
While simply calling a rehabilitation center does not ensure that an individual's abusive and hazardous drinking behavior will become a non-issue or that an individual will automatically be more receptive to learning about alcohol abuse facts, scheduling an appointment is undoubtedly a vital step in the treatment process. And because Keith wanted to learn more about alcohol abuse statistics, about getting professional assistance for his hazardous and careless drinking, and about alcohol abuse and alcoholism the probability for a successful recovery was considerably enhanced.
